Who we are.
Allegany State Park Geobash (ASPGB or ASP Geobash) is a geocaching “Mega Event” held every May at Allegany State Park in Southern New York and is attended by approximately 1,000 geocachers (give or take a few hundred) each year.
The Allegany State Park Geobash began in 2005 as a cooperative effort among several Geocaching club and organizations: The Kinzua Area Cachers, The Keystone Cachers, and the Allegany County Cachers’ Association (ACCA), who is a supporting club of NYGO.
Where can I stay when I attend ASP Geobash?
A limited number of rooms are available in the dormitory on the event grounds. They are on sale in the store usually starting in January. There are also many cabins and 2 campgrounds in Allegany State Park. The Red House Tent & Trailer Campground and any cabin loop on the Red House side of the park would be closest to the event grounds. The Cain Hollow Campground and many more cabin loops are available in the Quaker side of the park. All accommodations in the park are available at www.reserveamerica.com
Is ASP Geobash only on Saturday?
The official “Mega” Event is held at Camp Allegany all day on Saturday. However, there is a bonfire event to kick the weekend off on Friday night that has grown to attract about 400 people. It has become a can’t miss event. Additionally, a pancake breakfast, put on by the organizing committee, is always held on Sunday. Several hundred people show up at the breakfast, fill up on sausage and pancakes, and then lend a hand cleaning up. In 2017, an informal “Pizza and Mountain Pies” event is being added on Thursday night. This event is going to be held so everyone who helps to set up the event grounds, or who arrive in the park early, can relax on the evening before the busy weekend.
How is ASP Geobash funded?
Completely through donations, sponsorships and sales of event merchandise. The event is put on with a “razor-thin” budget. ASP Geobash is a completely non-profit event. ASP Geobash is run by a committee of geocachers, who volunteer to serve UNPAID, under a non-profit corporation, the Geobash Foundation. Making sure that this event continues every year is an on-going concern, so any donations of money or services, and purchases of event merchandise are VERY MUCH appreciated.
How did ASP Geobash start?
ASP Geobash started as a simple picnic, and has grown into one of the country’s longest-running geocaching Mega Events.
